Herald of Ash is a self buff that reserves mana to increase damage output. See also Herald of Ice and Herald of Thunder.

Skill Functions and Interactions

Extra Fire Damage: This modifier adds fire damage to all non-damage-over-time sources, including those from spells, attacks, and traps. The amount added is equal to 15% of the damage source's physical damage.

Ignite on kill: While Herald of Ash is active, when an enemy is killed by an attack (but not a spell), enemies within a radius from the killed enemy are ignited based on the overkill damage. Overkill damage refers to total excess damage of the killing hit, including non-fire damage.^[1] The ignite damage is affected by increased Burning Damage and increased Damage Over Time. This damage cannot be reflected.

Fire Damage: The increased Fire Damage from quality applies globally to all fire damage, including the extra fire damage and ignite on kill effects of Herald of Ash. Furthermore, any modifiers to fire and elemental damage from other sources will also affect both components of Herald of Ash.

Support gems: Any support gems (with the exception of Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Enhance") linked to the Herald of Ash will only affect the burn damage caused by ignition from overkill damage, not the extra fire damage from physical. For example, linking Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Item Rarity" to Herald of Ash will only apply rarity bonus to the enemies who die from the burn damage caused by Herald of Ash ignition.

Area of Effect: Area of Effect modifiers from passives, items and gems affect the radius of the on-kill effect. The damage modifier from Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Concentrated Effect" will affect the damage of the ignite.

Elemental Proliferation: Herald of Ash can be supported with Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Elemental Proliferation", so enemies ignited by the overkill effect will spread their ignite status effect to nearby enemies. As is always the case with the ignite status effect, only the ignite with the largest damage will be in effect if there are multiple enemies that proliferate their ignite.

Culling Strike: When using an attack with Culling Strike, the overkill effect will only apply if the damage from the killing hit would have taken the monster to less than 0 life.

Strategy

In the case where enemy death occurs uniformly at random with respect to damage dealt, the chance of an enemy dying from a particular hit is proportional to the damage the hit deals. The mean overkill damage for that hit is half the damage of the hit. This makes the mean overkill damage overall equal to
