Tempests are area effects that apply buffs to both players and monsters within their area. The tempests appear as small whirlwinds which appear for 4 seconds then detonate, applying their effect within their area. Tempests which give buffs apply it to both players and monsters within the area of effect, with a duration of 10 seconds. Multiple tempest buffs can apply on the one player but their effects do not stack, effectively just refreshing their duration. Tempests which cast damaging spells will damage both players and monsters.
In the Tempest league, Tempests were globally set for each area, and randomised hourly. Not all areas had a tempest each hour, but the chance for spawning one was 50%. Existing instance of an area retained old tempests. After the Tempest league ended, Tempests were not added to the core game. They are still available as a map effect, craftable through Zana's map device, if it was in the map mod rotation (which Tempest mod was not available in version 3.2.0). Many of the dangerous Tempest prefixes grant additional item quantity and quality.
