Template:Gem InfoboxSummon Raging Spirit is a minion spell that temporarily summons a flaming skull that charges at enemies and attacks them.

Skill functions and interactions

Flying monsters: The Raging Spirits are flying monsters, meaning they can fly over small obstacles much like projectiles do. However, they cannot fly over larger obstacles such as Module Error: Too many skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Frost Wall". Please choose only one of the following ids:
WbFrostWall - Deals (2-35) to (2-52) Cold Damage, Base duration is (1.60-3.45) seconds, 0.15 seconds between appearance of Wall sections, +(1-2.7) metres to Wall length (page)
ProphecyFrostWall - Deals (2-35) to (2-52) Cold Damage, Base duration is (1.60-3.45) seconds, 0.15 seconds between appearance of Wall sections, +(2-5.4) metres to Wall length (page)
. They also can't be damaged by ground effects (Burning ground, Chilled Ground, Shocked Ground and Tar). Flying monsters will not block the pathing of non-flying ones - they can walk under the fliers.[1]

Damage conversion: 50% of their physical damage is converted into Fire Damage, similar to the bonus on Infernal Blow.[2] Raging Spirits have no weapon, and thus do not benefit from Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Weapon Elemental Damage".

Targeting: Raging Spirits cannot be targeted directly by enemies. However, they may be damaged by stray projectiles and area of effect skills.

Minion Instability: Raging Spirits are affected by the Minion Instability keystone. They do not explode if their duration expires; only when reduced to low life.

Strategy

Damage auras

  • A level 20 Anger grants 72.1 additional average fire damage to Raging Spirits (taking into account the 70% damage effectiveness).
  • A level 20 Hatred grants 36% added cold damage, for an increase of 131.48 on a level 20 Summon Raging Spirit.
  • A level 20 Wrath grants 85.75 additional average lightning damage to Raging Spirits (taking into account the 70% damage effectiveness).

Hatred therefore has the highest damage contribution. It also benefits from increased physical damage modifiers on the Raging Spirits, unlike the other two. However, other possible beneficiaries of the aura (such as the player) may also need to be considered.

Support gems

(all calculations below assuming level 20 gems) From Modifiers, the multiples come after damage conversion, so for a Raging Spirit in a Hatred aura, it is doing 50% Physical, 50% Fire, and 36% Cold (percentages are off of the base Spirit) Assuming you have all Minion Damage nodes, you have 105% increased minion damage, for a basic damage of 278% of base roll.

  • Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Multistrike" gives 94% more attack speed for 30% less damage, which is all multiplicative, for roughly a 36% damage increase, (1+0.94)*0.7 for a damage factor of 377% of base roll.
  • Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Melee Splash" and Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Melee Physical Damage" gives 57% and 49% more physical damage, but since it is after conversion, you only go from 269% (sum of all damage types, including the node increases) to 337% and 329% of the base roll.
  • Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Melee Damage on Full Life" gives the same bonus as Melee Physical damage, and is normally safe as mobs do not attack spirits, unless you are against a mob that does AOE damage.
  • Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Minion Damage" gives 49% more damage (no type limitations) and so would result in a damage of 415% of base. (Pre 2.0, Minion Damage gave increased damage, which is added to the 105% for a damage of 345%.)
  • Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Empower" gives +40 base damage at level 20 and 21, +50 at level 22 and 23, etc, which translates to a ~10% exponential base damage per level of empower. Level 2 Empower is weaker than Melee Splash and Melee Physical Damage. Level 3 Empower is weaker than Added Fire Damage. Level 4+ Empower is better than everything.
  • Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Added Fire Damage" occurs during type conversion, and adds 44% of the base roll as extra Fire damage, which turns out to be 369% of base roll.
  • Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Added Cold Damage", Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Added Lightning Damage", and Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Added Chaos Damage" are additive, before multiplication and conversion. Of these, Added Chaos Damage is the best, at ~400% base roll on average (the added rolls are actually separate from the base rolls, so they have more variability, this is just an average.)

Synergies - Since Melee Splash and Melee Physical Damage all operate on Physical damage, they do multiply rather well. Comparing those two to Added Chaos Damage - Added Fire Damage still loses out, to the tune of ~20%, the advantage being that Physical Damage typically is mitigated less than elemental damage. (Especially since modifiers like added Fire Penetration or increased Elemental Damage from passives do not apply to minions.) An alternative may be Melee Splash and Added Chaos Damage. The loss here is only about 10%, in return for splashing and better chances of getting through against higher level mobs.

+2 Minions, +2 Melee, or +2 Fire (for item mods?) - The three Melee skills are, of course Melee, but the Raging Spirit itself is not. +2 Minions vs +2 Fire comes down to Added Fire Damage vs Minion Damage. Since Minion Damage appies to all converted damage, +2 Minions is better.

In order of preference:

  • Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Spell Echo" to give more Spirits
  • Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Minion Damage"
  • Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Added Chaos Damage"
  • Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Multistrike"
  • Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Empower" depending on level, but since it takes so long to level, it's probably the last one on your 6 link anyways

(if you don't have a leveled Empower)

  • Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Added Fire Damage" or Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Melee Splash" (Melee Splash may turn out better due to mitigation on the mobs)

AI

Raging Spirits don't behave like zombies or spectres, but they pick their targets independently of your actions (attacking usually the nearest targets while zombies focus their attack where you attack). It can be useful to help other minions focus their attacks on enemies near you instead of enemies somewhere far away because they'll prefer attacking enemies that the spirits are attacking.

Maximum Spirits

With the base cast time of 0.8s and base duration of 3.5s, you can only summon up to 5 spirits at a time, as the first one expires just after the fifth one is cast. The attributes that will improve max spirit count are Cast Speed and Skill Duration.

D: % increased Duration (from all sources)
C: % increased Cast Speed (from all sources)
E: % More Cast Speed (from Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Spell Echo")
Formula:
[3.5*(1+D/100)] / [0.8/(1+C/100)/(1+(E/100)]

which simplifies to:

4.375 * (1+D/100) * (1+C/100) * (1+E/100)

and round up to get the maximum number of spirits reached.

Example calculation: If you have 90% increased skill duration, 40% increased cast speed, and 50% more cast speed, you would use:

4.375 * 1.90 * 1.40 * 1.50 = 17.45625 -> Max spirits is 18
Formula for Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Spell Totem":
3.0625 * (1+D/100) * (1+C/100)
