Poison is a status ailment that does chaos damage over time.

Poison status defined as 'hit poisons enemy' deals 10% of all damage (including physical, elemental, and chaos damage[1]) of the hit that caused it, as chaos damage per second. The effect lasts for 2 seconds, dealing 20% of initial hit damage in total.

It can be caused by:

  • Critical strikes with daggers when the Adder's Touch passive skill is taken.
  • Attacks with weapons that have the Poisonous Hit mod.[2] Currently, Mortem MorsuMortem Morsu

    +40% to Global Critical Strike Multiplier
    (10-20)% of Physical Damage Converted to Chaos Damage
    25% reduced Enemy Stun Threshold with this Weapon
    60% chance to Poison on Hit
    Fear blisters the heart and thins the blood.
    Fear squeezes lungs and sets the guts to fester.
    Fear is the wound left untended.
    the only weapon with this unique mod. Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Bino's_Kitchen_Knife" can only spread existing poison status on surrounding enemies.
  • Monsters with the "Vile Touch" Nemesis mod.
  • Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Poison Arrow" skill, however, the poison status inflicted by it is an exception and has its magnitude and duration defined by the skill gem, it's still the same effect so it won't stack with aforementioned 'poison'.

Notes

Separate applications of poison do not stack cumulatively. Each poison effect remains present on the target until it runs its course, but only the one with the highest damage per second will cause damage at any given moment.[3] For example, assume an enemy is inflicted with poison for 100 damage per second, then after 1 second it is inflicted with poison for 50 damage per second. The outcome will be 200 damage over 2 seconds followed by 50 damage over 1 second.

Viper Strike charges are not poison, so they will stack with it.[4]

Damage of poison effect, as any other damage over time, can be increased by the Module Error: Too many skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Vulnerability". Please choose only one of the following ids:
IzaroVulnerabilityPylonOnDeath - 40% increased Physical Damage taken, 20% chance to be inflicted with Bleeding when Hit by an Attack, Base duration is 10.00 seconds (page)
IzaroVulnerability - Base duration is (5.00-6.45) seconds, Cursed enemies take (15-25)% increased Physical Damage, Attacks Hits against Cursed Enemies have 25% chance to inflict Bleeding (page)
