Skill types are a system similar to gem tags that apply to all skills, including those that are not granted by gems and are used for determining whether a skill can be supported by a linked support or affected by certain modifiers. Skill types are an implementation detail that is not directly shown to the user, but knowledge of the skill type system can clarify certain otherwise unexpected interactions.

Mechanics

Skill types determine which supports can be linked to a skill, and whether the skill is affected by modifiers that apply to a specific skill type. Skill types are often confused with gem tags; whether a modifier is referencing gem tags or skill types can be identified by the presence of the word 'gem'. For example, Bronn's LitheBronn's Lithe

in the field between you and the archers., both Stormbind and Rune Blast will benefit from the added gem levels, while the increased damage with movement skills would have no effect, as Rune Blast does not deal damage. On the other hand, the Socketed Movement Skills Cost no Mana Shaper mod will affect a socketed Rune Blast of Teleportation but not Stormbind.

Support skills

Each active skill has a list of associated skill types, and a list of minion skill types. Support skills have a list of "Allowed active skill types" and "Excluded active skill types", possibly containing boolean operators in reverse polish notation, which are applied separately to the skill types and the minion skill types and a list of "Added skill types" and "Added minion skill types" that are added to the type lists of any active skill they support. Support gems with the "Cannot modify the skills of minions" tag only check the skill types of the skill itself and not its minion skill types.
