An Eater of Worlds Altar with Map Boss and Eldritch Minions modifiers
An Eater of Worlds Altar with Wrath of the Cosmos and Eldritch Gaze allocated

When you slay monsters in maps that are influenced by The Searing Exarch and The Eater of Worlds, an altar may appear at their corpses. These Altars can be used to further control the risk and reward of these maps.[1]

Each altar presents a choice between two options with an Upside modifier and a Downside modifier. The category of modifiers are grouped between "Map Boss", "Eldritch Minions", and "Player" effects. Defeating the map boss will cause any subsequent Altars to be unable to generate Map Boss modifiers, limiting choices to only "Eldritch Minions" or "Player". This can be used strategically in maps such as City Square MapCity Square MapMap Level: 75
Map Tier: 8

to farm large pack sizes of Eldritch minions for rewards and Eldritch currency.

Eldritch Altar effects persist through the remainder of the map and cannot be removed. There is currently no way to see the modifier effects again after selecting them.

Using an Eldritch Altar will also spawn a pack of Eldritch Minions at its location.

Eldritch Altar effects can be modified through the Atlas keystones Wrath of the Cosmos and Eldritch Gaze, making the modifiers more rewarding but also significantly more deadly.

Version history

Version Changes
3.18.0
  • Eldritch Altars have been rebalanced, their downsides now feel more impactful and they now provide a wider diversity of rewards.
  • The Eldritch Altar option that causes Scarabs dropped by slain Enemies to have a chance to be Duplicated has been replaced with a new option that causes Divination Cards dropped by slain Enemies to have a chance to be Duplicated.
  • The Eldritch Altar option that causes Eldritch Minions to drop Burning Ground on Death no longer scales off of the main hand attack damage of the Monster, as this could result in highly variable amounts of Damage over Time dealt by the ground effect. This change has been applied to all cases of this in the game, notably Burning Ground on Death from Flame Helions and Caustic Clouds on Death from certain Zombies.
3.17.2
  • Oil that has been set alight is now treated as Burning Ground, and applies a Burning Ground debuff, rather than Burning Oil.
3.17.0
  • Introduced to the game.
