The wording of this passive means that skills that are granted by items will also benefit from the bonuses. For example, a Hierophant wielding a {{il|Doryani's Fist}} will see an increased Area of Effect on [[Doryani's Touch]].
Illuminated Devotion in [[Ruthless mode]] does not grant increased AOE or leech while you have Arcane Surge. Instead, it causes Arcane Surge to grant more [[spell]] damage.
 
The bonuses of this passive can be considered a free pseudo-support gem, that can also stack with the gems themselves, but without the increased mana multiplier of a gem. The effects of each bonus are equal to:
* Level 1 {{sl|Elemental Weakness}} or Level 3 {{sl|Cold Penetration Support}}, {{sl|Lightning Penetration Support}}, and {{sl|Fire Penetration Support}}

Note that the Life Leech bonus functions exactly as the gem would, leeching life to the source of damage. Thus, if totems are socketed in the Hierophant's boots, it is the totems that will leech life to themselves.

Illuminated Devotion is a notable Ascendancy passive skill for the Hierophant that grants increased area of effect, spell damage leech, and grants 50% effect reduction of non-damaging ailments, all while under the effect of Arcane Surge.
