Standardizing on a guide template

Let's have a quick discussion on how we want to link to guides. We currently have two templates for this: {{QuickGuide}} and {{See guide}}. We should pretty clearly consolidate down to one. They have pretty much the same parameters, so that should be easy. So, some thoughts:

  • On the name of the template: I don't much like calling guides "QuickGuide". Who decides whether a guide is actually "quick"? Do we need another template for guides that aren't "quick"? I'd rather just stick to "guide". Also, the template name "QuickGuide" seems like something that should be at the top of the guide itself, rather than something that refers to a guide. So overall I like the name "See guide" better.
  • As far as the appearance of the link: I personally think that the current look of {{QuickGuide}} is a bit too strong. On the other hand, I think that the current look of {{See guide}} is too weak -- it's just a hatnote that's easy to miss. I think we should aim for something in between -- something that uses an {{ambox}} so it stands out, but that doesn't have a background color that stands out so much against the page.

I previously deleted {{QuickGuide}} because User:Wonderfl wrote a number of "quick guides" (whatever that means) and then decided for himself that they should be given extra special prominence. There is no reason, other than self-indulgence, to display a brightly-colored notice about your guide at the top of an article, before any article content even. A link to a guide is not more important than the article itself. {{QuickGuide}} should not be used in articles. It looks way too flashy and its current usage does not respect the MoS. —Vini (t|c) 17:08, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
(For the record, I do think the guides are well-produced and useful. I like them a lot, and I thank User:Wonderfl for producing them. I personally wouldn't brand them as "quick guides", because that implies some sort of standard on length.)
As a starting point, I switched {{See guide}} from a hatnote to an {{ambox}} for better visibility -- it now has the same appearance as {{guide}}. We should use the same icon and probably a similar appearance for the "link to guide" and "here's a guide" templates, whatever that icon and appearance turn out to be. After reflection, I decided that I shouldn't make unilateral changes during discussion, and reverted to the hatnote form of {{See guide}}. I left the modified version in the sandbox for consideration. KickahaOta (talk) 18:36, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
Very harsh words, Vinifera. I thought you were a balanced and fair judge of content until today. I'm not some noob wiki editor, I have a well received set of contributions on the RS Wiki and I'm Admin on many small wikis. Anyway to tackle your sentence "There is no reason, other than self-indulgence, to display a brightly-colored notice about your guide at the top of an article" - As I have said many times before, I refer you to the Runescape Wiki, where this is a common practice. Agreed that the term "quick guide" is not very meaningful. Thanks KickahaOta for appreciating the guide content. This wiki has seen a lot of users leave due to unwanted toxicity from a couple of users, which is the reason I left too. To get on the subject, personally, I just like to have a link to the guide, see this page for instance. It is a quest article, but it links to the guide which helps you complete the quest in the fastest way possible. Unlike what Vini says about "self indulgence", the goal here is simple. Someone visits the Atlas page, and wants to learn how to operate it, he should have a link directly to the guide page. Currently this is surpressed and you have to scroll all the way to the end of the article to even discover that there is a guide. I think this is ridiculous. How are new players supposed to learn mechanics if the wiki does not help them learn? That was the whole purpose of the "brightly-colored notice", to redirect new players to a up-to-date and effective guide to completing content. I'm ok with any color scheme, it does not have to be "brightly colored", but a notice on the top of content articles like the Atlas or Heist to link to the guides seems to be useful from a new player's POV.
