The range of a skill or effect is the maximum distance it can influence anything from its point of origin.

Melee attacks typically have a relatively short range, while so-called "ranged" attacks and spells can hit targets from much farther away. Attacks and spells with an area of effect also have a range, and affect everything within.

For comparison:

The Master of the Arena notable passive increases melee attack range by 2. This only effects attacks which use the base range like Cyclone, not Cleave or Sweep for instance.
