Thaumetic Sulphite is a quest item found in the Supply Container at The Docks. It is required to complete the quest, 
Fiery Dust.
Lore
A similar item is mentioned in the lore object Letter of Instruction. It appears to have thaumetic properties which is why it is used by persons such as Lady Dialla and Shavronne. Clarissa (when discussing "statues") mentions that this substance is made from gem refining, and its effects soften the materials in the mobile statue monster type, allowing them to move.
Niko's machine uses Voltaxic Sulphite instead.
