English Guide

The aim of this page is to provide guidance on the production of concise, high-quality content for this wiki, within the context of the game Path of Exile, using modern formal UK-flavoured written-English.

Spelling

The wiki primarily uses New-Zealand English (a variant of British English) for consistency with in-game text.

Some common US->UK spelling differences:

Armor Armour
Flavor Flavour
Color Colour

Quantity Consistency

Multiple helmets can carry the mod:

  • The mod can be found on helmet from a specific area.
  • The mod can be found on helmets from a specific area.

"Several" implies more than one area:

  • several other area
  • several other areas

Even though there are multiple Masters in the game, "each" refers to them individually here:

  • 2% for each Masters.
  • 2% for each Master.

Here, "effects" is plural but "has" implies singular, use "have" instead:

  • The visual effects has been improved.
  • The visual effects have been improved.

Or, use "effect", and keep "has":

  • The visual effect has been improved.

Or, more concisely:

  • Improved visual effects.

Examples of words that imply "multiples":

  • on the right are counters
  • variants can be raised as spectres

Tense

"In grammar, tense is a category that expresses time reference with reference to the moment of speaking."

Avoid past-tense unless the subject is historical.

"Would" and "could" in the following examples imply something that used to occur, but might not occur now or in future:

  • Lunaris would return to its orb form
  • Lunaris will return to its orb form
  • Kill a rare Pocked Mason, which could be found in one of the following locations
  • Kill a rare Pocked Mason, which can be found in one of the following locations

Casted/Cast

The past-tense of "cast" is "cast" (unless the subject is social casts):

  • The spell was casted.
  • This metal was casted long ago.
  • His arm was casted in plaster.

Find/Found

  • can be find in
  • can be found in

On the other hand:

  • You can found the thing
  • You can find the thing

Found In/On

Mods and other intangible properties are placed "on" an item, not "in" an item. Generally, only physical items such as Gems are placed "in" an item:

  • The mod can be found in helmets from a specific area.
  • The mod can be found on helmets from a specific area.

Based Off/On

While any of these are usually acceptable in many spoken English variants, "based on" is preferred in formal written English, especially outside the USA:

  • This boss is based off of
  • This boss is based off
  • This boss is based on

Armours/Armour

"Armour" in the context of this game is short for "a suit of armour" in British variants of English. Therefore when referring to multiple suits or pieces of armour, "armour" is correct. These examples, shown in long-form, clearly demonstrate why: "two suits of armours", "two pieces of armours".

  • The area contains a lot of Armours
  • The area contains a lot of Armour

Some examples of English words that share this behaviour:

  • Furniture: a piece of furniture, a room full of furniture (Not "furnitures")
  • Cutlery: one box of cutlery, two boxes of cutlery (Not "cutleries" nor "cutlerys")
  • Sheep: one flock of sheep, two flocks of sheep (Not sheeps)

Please note: "Armours" was deemed acceptable in the early history of the wiki. Please do not attempt to make substantial changes with the sole purpose of correcting this issue.
