Path of Exile connects to servers that are located in various places in the world. The connection needs to stay active at all times to be able to play the game. Proper disconnection from the game is near instant,[1] but if the servers loses connection with the client it takes 6 seconds for the server to realize that the client has disconnected and logs the character out of the game.[2][3] There's also an additional disconnection timer of 40 seconds that is active at the beginning of a new area.[4]
