The vaal side areas versions can only be opened after the boss has been defeated. The vaal side area version always contains Vaal Skill Gems or Vaal Fragments. Sometimes it contains corrupted gear.

3.17.0	In order to have Vaal Temple feel more special as an outcome, we've added a special implicit modifier to Vaal Temple. The "Area contains 10 additional guarded Vaal Vessels" implicit modifier on Vaal Temple forces the map to generate with 10 Vaal Vessels. Each of these acts as a Strongbox (spawning 3 packs of monsters as well as a Vaal Side Area Boss). These Vaal Vessels have additional drops themed around corruption. This change will only be present on Vaal Temple Maps found after 3.17.0's release.
3.10.0	Added many new mods that can appear on Vaal side areas, including several that can influence the items and rewards found in those areas.
3.3.0	Vaal vessels found in Vaal side areas or by placing a Vaal fragment in the map device now drop more items.
