Trinity Support is an intelligence and dexterity support gem.

Skill functions and interactions

When an enemy is hit by a supported skill, and the highest type of damage taken is elemental (fire, cold, or lightning), Resonance will be gained of the types that are not the highest. For example, if fire damage is highest, then cold and lightning Resonance are gained. Resonance is indicated by a 3-sector circle at the top left of the screen, with fire (orange) in top right, cold (white) at the bottom, and lightning (blue) in the top left. When all 3 sectors are full and a triangle is visible in the center, Trinity support is functioning at full effectiveness.

If two elements are tied for the highest, only the third element will gain Resonance.[1] If all three elements are equal, or the highest damage type is physical and/or chaos, no Resonance will be gained at all.[2][3] If multiple Trinity supports are used, all supported skills share Resonance. Only hits can generate Resonance. Damage over time (e.g. Ignite) will not generate Resonance. Minions cannot gain Resonance. The gem's advanced description specifies (Maximum 50 Resonance of each Element).[4] There is currently no way to increase this maximum.

Examples:

  1. Damage rolls 100 fire, 1 lightning: cold/lightning Resonance gained (fire Resonance starts being lost)
  2. Damage rolls 100 fire, 200 lightning: fire/cold Resonance gained (lightning Resonance starts being lost)
  3. Damage rolls 100 fire, 100 lightning: cold Resonance gained (fire/lightning Resonances start being lost)
  4. Damage rolls 100 fire, 100 cold, 100 lightning: no Resonance gained (fire/cold/lightning Resonances start being lost)
  5. Damage rolls 100 physical, 100 chaos, 50 fire: no Resonance gained (fire/cold/lightning Resonances start being lost)
  6. Damage rolls 100 physical, 100 chaos, 100 fire: cold/lightning Resonance gained (fire Resonance starts being lost)

Balancing Resonance

Hits do not need to inflict all three elements to gain Resonance. However, it is recommended to use at least two elements with overlapping damage ranges to allow Resonance gain to alternate. If only two sectors remain full, this indicates the skill may have too high of a damage range for a single element (e.g. dealing significantly more fire damage than cold or lightning). Some ways to fix this can include adding more damage of the lower elements, reducing modifiers to the highest element, or changing conversion ratios. Note that flat lightning damage usually has a significantly wider range of minimum and maximum damage; this highly variable damage range can make alternating Resonances easier. Performs a melee attack, and causes lightning to strike a nearby enemy, dealing damage in an area. Each target can only be hit once by this skill. Hitting an enemy grants an aura for a duration. Even when damage ranges are identical, such as equal conversion, keep in mind that each damage type rolls the damage of each hit independently (see receiving damage), which will result in natural variation between which element is higher. Since Resonance is shared between all Trinity support gems, two or more skills with different highest damage types can be used to achieve full Resonance, instead of alternating damage types with a single skill.
