The Retch is a unique Rustic SashRustic Sash(12-24)% increased Global Physical Damage.

Mechanics

#% of Life Leech applies to enemies as Chaos Damage: this modifier causes hits to apply chaos DoT with a DPS and duration based on the recovery and duration of that hit's life leech.

The Retch's DoT is independent of player recovery: hits will inflict it even if the player is on full life and loses their leech immediately, or when the player is unable to recover life due to Strength of Blood. Increases to player recovery, such as % increased Recovery Rate of Life or the more specific % increased total Recovery per second from Life Leech do not affect the Retch’s damage.

Because the DoT is considered reflected damage[1], it is not modified by the attacker’s offensive stats, only by stats on the enemy. Its duration can be extended by Temporal ChainsTemporal ChainsSpell, AoE, Duration, Curse, Hex

, dealing the same DPS for a longer duration. Each instance of the DoT can deal damage; damage taken is unaffected by the per-second cap on recovery from leech[2].

Ghost Reaver disables this mod completely. The Retch cannot deal damage in areas with Cannot Leech from Monsters, or against monsters with Life Cannot Be Leeched. It has no interaction with Damage Taken from Hits is Leeched as Life.

This modifier can be increased by Noxious and Fertile catalysts, up to 240%.

. Instant leech does not result in more total damage, as the Retch’s DoT can stack indefinitely.

Interaction with proxies

Skills used by totems, traps, mines, mirages, and other proxies can inflict Retch DoT in the same way as the player. This uses the player’s stats for all calculations, including maximum life.[3] Because dead objects cannot leech, traps and mines can only leech before finishing their trigger/detonation animation.

Kills by Retch DoT from non-player objects are not attributed to the player, unlike most other forms of damage over time. When Retch DoT from no longer existing objects causes monsters to die, those monsters do not grant experience or flask charges, and their loot is unaffected by player item quantity and rarity[4].

Scaling

The Retch's base damage is bottlenecked by Maximum recovery per Life Leech, normally 10% of the player’s maximum life, whether it’s instant or not.[5] Therefore, in order to scale the Retch's damage, the player can increase the maximum duration of leech through % increased Maximum recovery per Life Leech, increase their maximum life, increase their hit rate, slow debuff expiration by cursing the enemy with Temporal Chains, or cause the enemy to take more chaos damage.

Example damage calculation

A character has 8000 maximum life and 100% increased Maximum Recovery per Life Leech, setting the cap for its leech instances at 1600 total life. With 2% damage leeched as life, it caps a leech instance with 80,000 damage per hit, leeching 160 per second for 10 seconds. A 20% quality Retch will cause this hit to also inflict a DoT instance with a base DPS of 160x2.4=384 and the same 10 second duration.

Against an enemy debuffed to -30% chaos resistance and 120% increased damage taken, this DoT deals 384x1.3x2.2=1098.24 DPS for 10 seconds. If the enemy is also debuffed by Temporal Chains, the same DPS will be dealt for 12.5 seconds instead.

In this scenario, each 80,000 damage or higher hit will cause the Retch to deal an additional 13,728 damage (over 12.5 seconds).

Item acquisition

The Retch has restrictions on where or how it can drop. It cannot be chanced.

The Retch itself is not a league-specific item. However, the ingredients of the vendor recipe were tied to Talisman league. There are additional ways to acquire league-restricted items, see the article for the League-specific items for more details. Since version 3.14.0 the ingredients are also included in the core drop table.
