Not to be confused with Memory strand.

Threads of Consciousness, also known as Memory Threads or simply "Threads", are a strange thread-like substance found near tears in reality caused by distorted memories called Memory Tears. Eagon Caeserius is able to link to these memory threads to open portals to dreamscapes of Zana's memories, introduced in the quest Threads of the Originator.

Mechanics

Players can first randomly find a bundle of iridescent threads near a memory tear in Tier 14+ maps. Interacting with it allows Eagon to extract the location of a Memory Thread in the Atlas of Worlds, creating a gauntlet of typically 3 adjacent maps on the Atlas (starting on the map you found the Memory Thread in) plus an exclusive Tier 16 map not normally found on the Atlas (Courtyard of Wasting MapCourtyard of Wasting MapMap Level: 83

), containing a memory boss. Players can interact with Eagon in their hideout to craft these maps; they are also affected by your Atlas tree, scarabs, and other map fragments, and map crafting options from your map device. Eldritch Beacons cannot be activated on these maps during the initial quest. The areas will be opened in sequence each time you interact with Eagon in your hideout if you successfully complete the previous map.

All of the maps in a Memory Thread are considered memory influenced maps. Their random modifiers roll from regular map modifiers as well as Tier 17 map modifiers. Within these maps, monsters may be imbued with Memory Petals, granting them enhancements. Defeating these enemies grants Memory Petals to you which can be spent to activate between one to three Memory Petal Skills. The petals for each ability have individual counters. Additionally, equipment found in these maps may sometimes have Memory Strands that enhance crafting outcomes.

Defeating each map boss in the Thread spawns a Memory Altar, providing two different modifier choices. The picked modifier will be applied to the remaining maps in the Thread, stacking up as you get further in. These effects can range from affecting Memory Petal acquisition, Memory Strands found on items, various map mechanics or map crafting options, or other miscellaneous bonuses.

Post-quest

After completing the Threads of the Originator quest and defeating all three Incarnation pinnacle bosses for the first time, the mechanics of Memory Threads change slightly:

  • Memory Tears can be found randomly in T14+ maps which when interacted with allows Eagon to create a Memory Thread leading to a random Incarnation. This appears to have a base chance of 5%.[1]
    • Certain Atlas passives can modify the chances for a specific Incarnation to be chosen. By default, a specific Incarnation has 33% chance to be chosen. By taking two reduction nodes, this can be increased to ~71%.
    • The Atlas small passive skill Memory Tear Chance can grant up to 40% increased chance to find memory tears in T16+ maps.
  • The first map is always the map you found the memory thread in, and the remaining maps can be any adjacent map not previously chosen. If the current map is not on the Atlas (e.g. Shaper Guardian or Tier 17 map), the starting map is randomized.
  • The map is affected by the player's Atlas, including scryed divination cards. The tiers of maps in the Memory Thread start at the tier of the map where the player found the memory tear (up to Tier 16), increasing by 1 for each consecutive map up to Tier 16.
  • The length of Memory Tears can now range from 4-8 maps, including the final exclusive map.
  • Eldritch Beacons can now be activated on these maps, allowing the Exarch's and Eater's monsters to appear and allowing the Maven to witness map bosses. The Maven cannot witness the memory bosses at the end of a Memory Thread and the Maven's beacon is disabled on the final exclusive map.
  • Completing the final exclusive map in the thread and defeating the memory boss drops an echo fragment. These can be used to fight the corresponding Incarnation at a later time.

Cursed

If a player fails to complete a memory thread map (either by using up all portals or letting the instance expire), the map can be attempted again; however, it will remove all existing Memory Altar modifiers and gain the unremovable enchantment Area is Cursed. This modifier penalizes item drops, player experience, and restricts certain content from appearing. It has no relation to curse skills. It also significantly reduces the number of memory petals obtained and prevents Exarch or Eater influence monsters and altars from appearing.
