Gem
Gems are a type of item that grants a skill (skill gem) or modifies a linked skill (support gem) when socketed into a corresponding colour socket in a piece of equipment. The character needs to have the required level and attributes specified on the gem to socket it. There are currently 531 different skill gems and 211 support gems in the game, for a total of 742.
Gem types
Skill Gems
Skill gems grant various types of skills that can be used by the player. For a list of skill gems, see List of skill gems excluding vaal skills.
Tranfigured Gems
Most skill gems have one or more alternate versions called Transfigured Gems (denoted by having "of X" as a suffix) to the default gem that alters their function and balance.
Trathan gems
Trathan gems are another alternate versions of skill gems (denoted by having "of Trarthus" as a suffix).
Vaal Skill Gems
Vaal skill gems are special versions of skill gems that grant both the regular version of the skill and a Vaal version, which consumes Souls gained from killing monsters or dealing damage to bosses to use a significantly stronger but temporary version of the regular skill. Vaal skill gems can be identified by the orange-red details in the inventory art compared to the typical yellow-gold. For a list of vaal skill gems, read List of skill gems granting vaal skills
Support Gems
Support gems modify supported skill gems in various ways, increasing their damage or providing different effects. For a list of support gems, see List of support gems. Only a single copy of each support gem can affect a skill. The highest level support gem is prioritized.
Awakened Support Gems
Awakened support gems are special versions of support gems that can only be obtained from specific endgame bosses or encounters. These gems provide numerically or mechanically stronger versions of their regular support gem counterparts. Note that Awakened support gems cannot stack with their non-Awakened variant.

Experience
- Socketed gems gain 10% of the experience your character earns, before any level penalties. This value is not affected by level penalties.
- The number of gems you have equipped has no effect on the rate of experience gain.

do affect gem experience indirectly. - Gems socketed in inactive weapon slots (weapon swap or disabled items) gain experience and can be levelled up, as long as the requirements are met.
- Gems can be traded like other items and will retain their experience.
Once a gem has enough experience to level up, it will stop gaining experience and a level-up icon will appear on the right of the screen and in the inventory menu. Left-clicking it will level up the gem, and a button to level up all gems will appear if multiple gems are capable of doing so. Right-clicking the icon instead will lock the gem's level, hiding it from the main screen and preventing the gem from gaining any further levels or experience. Players may choose not to level up certain gems to their maximum for various reasons, such as decreasing the threshold to proc

Gems that have their levels locked and hidden can be viewed in the player's inventory screen below their inventory slots; right-clicking the lock icon will level up the gem but keep it locked, while shift-right-clicking it will unlock it instead.
As gems level up, their stats increase and may gain additional effects, but the level and attribute requirements to use them also increase, as well as their cost in most cases. If a gem gains enough experience to level up, but the exile currently does not meet the requirements, the level–up icon will appear greyed out and not be useable until the requirements are met. For specifics, see the lists of active skills and support gems below.
Facetor's Lens and the respective option of the Divine Font that grant experience to a gem automatically levels up gems to prevent wasting experience. The "Increase level of non-Corrupted Awakened Gem by 1" Beastcraft, on the other hand, will discard any excess experience.

Level cap
Each gem has a level cap which once reached will no longer gain experience. For most gems, this cap is Level 20. Corrupting a gem also has a chance to raise a gem's current level by 1, up to 1 above the level cap. Various items and stats can increase the effective level of the gem, however, to a maximum of level 40.
For example, gems can be modified by local or global modifiers to gem level, such as Paragon's - +1 to Level of Socketed Gems (Prefix) and Exalter's - +1 to Level of all Skill Gems (Prefix) or their more specific variations, corruption implicit modifiers, or unique items such as

can be used to upgrade a gem's quality. Adding quality to a gem will add an additional effect to the skill. The exact modifications quality gives to the gem are displayed in the detailed view (hover over the item and hold Alt).
The quality effects scale with each percentage of quality. However, many effects have certain breakpoints to have a practical impact on the quality effect. Non-integer values are usually rounded down. For example, 3% quality on a gem with 0.5% increased damage will only grant 1% increased damage, not 1.5%. Refer to individual gem pages for specific details about these breakpoints.

It's suggested that you apply Corruption to a Skill Gem when the Skill gem is at level 20, 20% quality or both in order for corruption to potentially exceed the cap.
After the release of Incursion league, it became possible to achieve "double-corruption" of a gem by using the Lapidary Lens device in The Temple of Atzoatl. The device corrupts a skill or a support gem twice, which makes possible to apply two different effects of corruption at once. This allows to receive a level 21 gem with 23% quality.
Obtaining gems
There are several methods of obtaining gems:
- Random item drops in all areas.
- Offered as a quest reward (see List of gems rewarded from quests).
- Purchased from certain town vendors after completing quests (see List of gems rewarded from quests).
- Vendors in Acts 1-4 towns sell gems which scale up in gem level based on the player's level, up to approximately a level requirement of 50-54. The available gems are based on the character's class and quest progression.
- Siosa in Act 3 (The Library) sells all gems at gem level 1 that have a required level of 31 or lower, excluding
