Note that that variant has a lower damage multiplier so that overall damage calculation are more complex.

Version history
Flame Champion currently only refers to fire damage melee skeleton warrior that equipped with a shield, but past footage of the game indicated that there was a variant that use axe and without a shield, was existed in normal difficulty The Ancient Pyramid.[1] It is not sure when this variant is removed, but probably not last long, as a 2014 (right before the release of version 1.2.0) game footage already shown Flame Champion are equipped with a shield in the Ancient Pyramid.[2]
Currently, the shield variants are known as Flame Champion, Frost Champion and Thunder Guardian. The latter also has no shield variant.
This inconsistency also exists among LMP magi (Flame Harbinger, Frost Harbinger and Thunder Champion), as well as vaal construct (Vaal Flame Guardian, Vaal Frost Guardian and Vaal Bone Warden), and the no shield melee warrior in The Caverns areas (Flame Guardian, Frost Guardian and Bone Warden).
