Support gem

Support Gems, also known as simply supports, are an item class of gems used to modify the behaviours of supported skill gems. Previously known as support skill gems, their name was changed to prevent confusion as supports are not actually skills.

Mechanics

Instead of granting a specific skill like skill gems do, support gems modify any compatible skill gem linked to the support, modifying its behaviours as well as applying a mana cost multiplier. Many support-skill gem combinations are invalid; for example, a ClarityClarityAura, Spell, AoE

Multiple skill gems may be linked to a single support gem, in which case the support will modify all supported skills. Multiple support gems may be linked to a skill gem, in which case the skill gem will be modified by all of the supports. However, if two copies of a given support gem are linked to the same skill, only the higher level gem will apply. If a body armour contains two copies of a skill gem linked to different sets of support gems, two separate versions of the skill will be available, each with their own modifications. This may be desirable if for instance one version has been modified for single target damage, while another has been modified for area of effect damage. Support Gems add an icon in the form of a coloured letter or symbol to any supported skills' icons on the Skill Bar.

Awakened support gems and their non-awakened counterparts are considered the same gem. If a skill gem is simultaneously supported by an awakened support and its non-awakened counterpart, only the awakened support gem's effects will apply, if possible.

Many supports have also received changes to their quality stats. Anomalous, Divergent and Phantasmal Quality Gems have been removed from the game. Existing alternate Quality Gems now have the base Quality effect found on the respective Gem.

2.3.0	All Support Gems now have Support as part of their name. When you hover over a socketed Support Gem, it now shows what Skill Gems it affects by making them glow. The same is true for Skill Gems showing what Support Gems affect them. This currently does not properly handle the case of Support Gems that change a Skill Gem so that it enables or disables other Support Gems.
0.9.3	Changed the gem-support system so that only Support Gems in the same physical group as a Skill Gem connect to it. If you have two groups with the same skill, you get two bindable skills. This is done so that supports can be made more impactful and so that players can have multiple variations of the same skill in their build. Support gems now have a flat multiplier to the mana cost of the skill that does not go up exponentially as they level up. Much of their benefit is available at the first level of the gem, but higher levels offer improvements (for free) if you meet their requirements. Support gems are balanced such that only a few of them are needed to make a skill feel powerful.
0.8.6	Skill and support gems can now have quality, like equipment. Each gem is affected by quality in a specific way - for example, additional damage or attack speed. Skill gems from quest rewards have zero quality.
