Dual wielding refers to using a one-handed weapon in both hands. It is intended to be an option halfway between the damage output of two-handed weapons and the defensiveness of a shield and weapon combo.

Mechanics

Whenever the player equips two one-handed weapons of any type, dual wielding grants the following stats:

The attack speed bonus is applied multiplicatively with other attack speed modifiers. There are additional bonuses to dual wielding which can be gained via passive skills. Weapons do not have to be of the same type to receive dual wielding bonuses.

There are no penalties of any kind to attacks with the player's off-hand weapon. The majority of attack skills in Path of Exile will alternate between equipped weapons for attacks, swinging first with the main hand and then with the off-hand weapon. The resulting attack speed is the average of the two weapons' attack speed, so the total time for a pair of attacks is as if each weapon attacked once.

When dual-wielding weapons with different range, the range used is dependent on the skill.[1]

It is possible to dual-wield two wands; it is not possible to dual-wield a wand and a melee weapon. If a player was able to somehow equip a wand and melee weapon simultaneously, the wand would be disabled.

Interaction with skills

While dual wielding, when you use an attack skill you will use the skill with your main hand then use it on the off hand, alternating with each use.

When using a weapon-specific skill while dual wielding, both weapons must be compatible with the skill in order for the skill to be usable. For example, you cannot use ReaveReaveAttack, AoE, Melee

Simultaneous attacks

While most attack skills used while dual wielding alternate between using one hand and the other, some skills calculate the damage from both weapons then combine them into a single hit. Both weapons will roll their damage values and their accuracy and critical strike checks separately, then combine the expected damage of both weapons. It is possible to miss or crit with one weapon, but not the other. On-hit effects will only proc once with a simultaneous attack. If a hit is calculated where one attack crits and the other does not, the single combined hit is considered a crit, but the damage of the non-crit will not retroactively be scaled by critical strike multiplier.

The same mechanic is used to combine the damage per second values of damaging ailments[2] , inflicting a single stack combined damage over time. If Perfect Agony is allocated, only the ailment damage from hits/hands which critical strikes are included.[3]

Leech effects are calculated and applied after combining the damage of each weapons. As simultaneous attacks generate only one hit, only one leech stack will be generated. Any weapon effects which modify leech, such as "Life Leech from Hits with this Weapon is instant" from Bloodseeker are applied to this stack and affect the leech generated by both weapons, despite the "with this weapon" wording.

The attack speed of simultaneously attacking skills will average the attack speed of both weapons. This is irrelevant to Dual Strike of AmbidexterityDual Strike of AmbidexterityAttack, Melee, Strike
