Defences is a keyword that collectively refers to armour, evasion rating, energy shield,[1] and ward. Armour, Evasion, and Energy Shield are sometimes referred to as the "Primary Defences" as they can be found globally throughout the game via equipment or the passive tree. Ward is a relatively newer type of defence exclusive to items found in the Expedition mechanic.

Note that #% increased (Global) Defences stats are additive with other mods that globally increase individual Defences, such as #% increased maximum Energy Shield. This means that if you allocate Deflection for 40% increased Defences from Equipped Shield and you have a total of 120% increased maximum Energy Shield from other sources, the total increase is 160% increased maximum Energy Shield; the values are not multiplicative.[2]

Although other stats under "Defence" tab of the character screen may be colloquially referred to as defences (e.g. resistance, dodge, block, spell suppression), these are not considered Defences for the purpose of the keyword and will not be scaled.
