A captured beast.

Beasts are special monsters that players hunt down with Einhar, Beastmaster to capture and bring to his Menagerie. They were introduced in Bestiary league as its league mechanic. These beasts have special Bestiary monster modifiers and are used for beastcrafting.

Mechanics

Beasts can start appearing in Act 2. Areas which contain these beasts will have at least two to five Yellow Beasts and at least one Red Beast. Yellow Beasts have one Bestiary mod and have a yellow icon on the minimap. Red Beasts have two Bestiary mods and have a red icon on the minimap. Red beasts have significantly higher life and spawn monsters periodically. Beasts cannot have their life reduced below 1 and are immune to culling strike-like effects.

While Yellow Beasts can be any normally spawnable monster with the Beast monster category, Red Beasts are monsters that cannot be encountered normally. These include the four Spirit Beasts which can be used in beastcrafting to create six portals that lead to a boss fight with an avatar of the First Ones. The Black Mórrigan and "Harvest Beasts" (capturable beasts from Harvest encounters) have a chance to appear in tier 14+ maps.

Beasts can also be found in a Beast node in the Azurite Mine. These beast can be killed and do not seem to get added to the Menagerie once defeated.

The hunt

Once a beast drops below 50% life, Einhar will appear in the zone to assist in the hunt. Einhar uses ranged attacks, fires a barrage of crossbow shots or throws an explosive on a cooldown, and provides an aura that grants the "Boon of the First Ones" buff, which grants Regenerate 5% of Life per second, 3% of Damage Leeched as Life, and Recover 5% of Life on Kill. He will throw nets at beasts that are low on health to capture them and send them to the Menagerie. The instance owner always gets the beast, regardless how far they are. Other party members within a 250 unit radius (25 metres) or roughly two screens have a chance of obtaining a copy of the beast, based on the item quantity bonus for party play. Einhar leaves once all the beasts are captured, unless the Mighty Hunter Atlas passive is allocated.

Loot dropped by captured beasts is affected by the quantity and rarity modifiers of the instance owner.[1]

Beastcrafting

Main article: Beastcrafting

Beastcrafting is a method of crafting by sacrificing beasts to the blood altar in the Menagerie. Beastcrafting requires four beasts to be sacrificed, with most of them require one or two specific red beasts and two or three yellow beasts. When beastcrafting, the four beasts chosen are released into the arena surrounding the blood altar and must be killed to complete the recipe. If the player dies during the attempt, the recipe fails and the beasts are lost.

Trivia

In the Bestiary league, players had to capture beasts themselves using nets. Some resurrected or undead versions of beasts (e.g. Bone Rhoas) did not not count as beasts, and therefore could not be captured. However, interestingly, Skeletal Beasts like Tyrannursus Maximus and The Great White Bones could be captured.
