Maps serve as the endgame content in Path of Exile. Like equipment, they come in magic, rare, and unique qualities and have their own special affixes. Affixes on maps can make them more difficult but can also increase your potential rewards.

Maps can drop from anything that can drop items of item level 60 or higher. Non-map areas cannot drop maps higher than level 66, as of patch 0.10.8.

You can access this content after completing the quests for Lady Dialla in Act 3 on merciless difficulty. You can then access the Eternal Laboratory where maps can be used.

Note that in some of the pages for specific maps, it is indicated whether the map is indoors or outdoors. The main purpose of this is for predicting the behaviour of the map prefix Labyrinthe (Map is a maze), which has virtually no effect on outdoor maps and generally makes indoor maps much larger.

Maps in bold are unique.

Modifiers

Each (non-unique) map can have up to 3 prefixes and 3 affixes, just like other items. Currency related to rarity also works the same, for example an orb of alchemy will turn a basic map into a rare. Modifiers for maps change the properties of the map when one is in that map, thereby making it more difficult and (usually) resulting in increased item quantity for all drops on that map. High increased quantity also affects the drop rates of maps while in a particular map, so high modifiers will increase your chances at continuing to get map drops and finding higher level maps to use.

The Dried Lake is an area in Act 4. It has no waypoint and is connected to Highgate. It is the first area players will enter after reaching Highgate in order to kill Voll, Emperor of Purity. Upon entering for the first time, the player's character will make a comment on it.

The exit to Highgate spawns in the northwest of the map. The player must travel south and east to find the boss's ruined camp and the boss himself.

Monsters

The native enemies that have elemental damage all do lightning damage, and most resist it as well. The boss, Voll, Emperor of Purity, resists all elemental damage, including chaos damage, but will only do basic physical attacks. When you defeat him for the first time, he drops Deshret's BannerDeshret's BannerWhen the sun sets, the plains should be red., which is needed for the quest Breaking the Seal. Overgrown Ruin Map (War for the Atlas) is a map area based on The Chamber of Sins.

      Layout

Like the act zone it is based upon, the map has multiple floors connected with stairs. The boss waits in a separate arena reachable through a portal located on the third floor.

      Encounters

      Boss

Visceris, based on Maligaro, the Artist and the mini-bosses Akaveesh (Black Death, Pain Unending) and M'uneh (Fidelitas, Loyalty Undying) of Maligaro's Sanctum area of the act 7. The boss is split into several phases.

Phase One begins upon approaching Visceris.

      • Teleports behind the player and cleaves in an area. This ability will Inflict Maim
      • Three-hit combo attack: Cleave, kick, stab
      • Charges and throws 5 purple projectiles at the location the player was when the charge finishes

Phase Two begins when Visceris is dropped to 75% hp and disappears into the ground; Akaveesh appears shortly after and begins attacking.

      • Fires three orb projectiles in a cone
      • Spits a volley of orbs that fall to the ground and deal damage in a small area
      • Fires a large slow projectile that leaves purple desecrated ground in it's trail
      • After Akaveesh loses a portion of health, Visceris will occasionally pop up to attack, but is invulnerable

Phase Three and Four After killing Akaveesh, Visceris will re-appear and can be damaged until he reaches 50%, at which he will disappear again and M'uneh pops up from the ground.

      • Channels briefly and slams the ground in a four small areas in front of him
      • Casts a purple Tempest Shield that lasts for a short time
      • Will attack with either his claw or lance that spawns a small purple cloud-like projectile
      • After M'uneh loses a portion of health, Visceris will occasionally pop up to attack, but is invulnerable

Phase Five begins after killing M'uneh, leaving Visceris alone again

      • During this phase, Visceris gains a Whirling Blades-like attack that he will use from random areas in the arena towards the player, up to 6 times, before using another attack.

        3.1.0
        • The entire Atlas has been reworked. Many map names have changed, as have their balance, tier and position on the Atlas. Many maps have also had their boss fights swapped or completely reworked.
        • The rules used to generate monsters in endgame maps have been significantly reworked and rebalanced around the rate at which we expect players to reliably clear out the map. In general, narrow, linear maps will contain fewer total monsters than maps with complex layouts. We will be closely monitoring and adjusting the balance of this change and expect to make further changes and improvements over time.

Arcade Map is a map area.

        Layout

Like the act zone it is based upon, this map is a large area of ruined market stalls, creating a web of narrow passageways and many obstacles. Dead ends occur very infrequently only. There is no separate boss arena, instead, they are waiting in a medium sized room branching off from the map edge. The floor around the bosses is marked with sand spirals.
