Aura

An Aura is a permanent effect that benefits your character that also extends its benefits to nearby party members and minions. Auras reserve a portion of your Mana pool. All Auras, with the exception of Clarity, reserve a percentage of your Maximum Mana pool.

All allies within range of a player's aura skill will receive the Aura's buff. Passive and item mod bonuses can apply to the stats granted by auras, but these bonuses are determined by the passives and items of the receiver, not the player who is the source of the aura. For example, player A has passives for extra energy shield and is generating a Discipline skill icon.pngDiscipline aura. Player A will gain a bonus on the energy shield granted by the aura. But party member Player B who is standing inside the aura radius of Player A will only receive the base amount of energy shield granted by the aura unless Player B also has energy shield boosting passives.

Support Gem Combinations

Auras themselves do not do damage. They provide a buff which can add extra damage, extra defenses or utility. As with curses, added damage supports can't be linked with auras successfully. These support gems will affect auras:

Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Blood Magic (Support Gem)" - This will cause linked Auras to reserve health instead of mana.

Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Increased Area of Effect" - Increases the radius of the Aura.

Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Reduced Mana" - Reduces the mana or health reserved to maintain the Aura. This works for both flat amount reservation and percent based reservation.

Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Spell Totem" - Casts a totem which will maintain an Aura. The cost to cast the totem is the mana that would be reserved multiplied by the Mana Cost Multiplier of the Totem support and any other linked support gems.

Passives

There are passive skill nodes that grant bonuses to Auras or reduce their cost.

Aura Effect is a basic passive skill that grants increased effect magnitude for auras cast by the character. There are 4 in total.

Identifying a buff

Each buff affecting the player will display an icon with a green border in the top-left of the screen.[1][2] This is one way to determine whether or not an effect is a buff - if it does not show an icon, it is not a buff that is attached to the player. For other icons shown there, see active and temporary effects.

The functioning of buffs

A buff simply adds statistics and modifiers to the creature it is attached to. Although a buff may increase the damage of the that the affected creature deals with hits, a buff itself cannot deliver hits or take any action. A buff may include degeneration or damage-over-time effects. For example, if a monster is attacked by a player using the WrathWrathAura, Spell, AoE, Lightning

aura, the monster is not "hit" by the aura, or the buff, it is the player that hits the monster:

  1. Wrath is a spell that is cast by the player.
  2. The spell creates an aura that applies a buff to any allies within range.
  3. The buff contains a modifier that adds lightning damage to the player's attacks
  4. The player hits the monster, dealing the added lightning damage

Buff duration

All buffs have a duration, which can be infinite (as in the case of auras). This duration is affected by Buff Duration modifiers, and can also be affected by Skill Effect Duration modifiers if the buff was applied by a skill.

The passive skills which increase buff and debuff duration apply not to buffs on you but to buffs (including debuffs) you create, either on yourself or other entities. This includes all the above as well as such things as the debuffs placed on cursed monsters.

Buff expiration - Being cursed with Temporal Chains and having the Shaper's Presence buff can make Other effects on Cursed enemies expire % slower. These 2 mods are additive with one another and capped at 75%.

  • Example At 50% Other effects on Cursed enemies expire % slower all buffs expire 2 times slower. This is equivalent too 100% more buff duration for calculating total buff duration.

Buff effect

The effect of a buff can also be increased or reduced. Modifiers that increases Buff Effect increase the bonuses from buffs that affect yourself, that includes both positive and negative bonuses. Therefore one has to be careful when amplifying two-sided buffs.

Buff copies

  • Multiple copies of the same buff do no stack with each other. When multiples copies of the same buff are on one character, the game will only count the strongest buff as active.

Debuffs

A debuff is a type of effect that only provides a detrimental effect to the debuffed creature and can be identified by having a specific red border around the icon. For instance the damage over time from Bleed or Poison are considered debuffs.[3]

Exception

Standing on enemy's consecrated ground is displayed without red border and is displayed as normal skill effect. Only such case.

Interactions

Monsters that can remove Buffs

  • Nemesis monsters can have a modifier called nullifier. This will remove all temporary buff effects on a character every time the monster hits a character.
