Spellslinger is a skill gem that causes the linked spell to be triggered when the user fires a projectile from their equipped wand and adds the wand's damage to the spell. The linked spell reserves mana while active.

Despite the fact that this gem can support another skill gem (as Spellslinger Support), it does not have the Support gem tag.

Skill functions and interactions

The gem has two functions:
As Spellslinger

  • Reserves mana based on the supported spells to cause those spells to trigger when you fire projectiles from a wand attack.
    • This Skill's Mana Reservation is the total of the Mana Reservations of Supported Skills and cannot be further modified.

As Spellslinger Support:

  • Supports spell skills that do not reserve mana. Cannot support skills used by totems, traps or mines. Cannot modify the skills of minions.
    • Trigger Supported Spells when you fire Projectiles from a Non-Triggered Wand Attack
    • Supported Skills have Added Spell Damage equal to (60-174)% of Damage of Equipped Wand
    • If two Wands are Equipped, each contributes half as much Added Damage
    • Supported Skills have (0-38)% increased Cooldown Recovery Rate

Lastly, a mana reservation overrides the supported active skill. The active skill part toggles the mana reservation on/off.

The active skill supported by Spellslinger can be triggered when using the basic attack with a wand equipped or while using a wand-based skill with a wand equipped.

  • You link Spellslinger Support to one or more spell active skill gems like a standard support gem. Those spells become unavailable for normal use.
  • You have to turn on the active skill part of the Spellslinger gem, which reserve mana like aura, herald or aspect skill to activate the function of the Spellslinger Support part of the gem.
  • The default mana reserve of the Spellslinger skill itself is 0%. For each active spell linked to it, you will reserve an additional (30-25)% mana (or even less), depending on the gem level of Spellslinger. The base reservation value can be seen in the "Spellslinger Support" section of the Spellslinger gem tooltip in-game. If you don't have enough mana available to support all linked spells, the Spellslinger ability will not be available.
  • Despite the gem claims the amount of mana reserved cannot be further modified, it can be modified by the lab enchantment, mana multiplier from support gem, and increased Mana Reservation Efficiency from passive skill and jewel implicit, etc. The wording and cannot be further modified probably refer to the mana reserve cannot double-dip, as sources mentioned above. Mana reservation efficiency only affects linked skill gem but not Spellslinger (which is the sum of mana reserve of the linked skill gem despite not actually reserve twice).
  • With the Spellslinger is active and reserving mana, if you fire a wand projectile, every linked spell triggers simultaneously.
  • The Spellslinger effect applies a 0.6 second Cooldown to linked spells by default. Spells with their own cooldown period that is longer than this (such as Cold SnapCold SnapSpell, AoE, Cold, Duration

    ), they instead inherit the 0.6 second cooldown of Spellslinger; even if you can fire your wand faster than every 0.6 seconds, the linked spells will not fire until Spellslinger's cooldown is done and the wand will just fire normal shots. Attack and Cast speed modifiers do not affect cooldown. Cooldowns are shared between multiple instances of the same spell linked to any Spellslinger gem.

Real Cooldown & Cooldown Threshold

There is an internal cooldown to how fast spells can be triggered.

Currently, the cooldown is 600ms, however:[1]

  • Servers do not calculate the game in real-time but divide it into chunks that are calculated at once.
  • One of these server calculation steps is called a tick. A server tick has a duration of 33 milliseconds.
  • The status of cooldowns is only updated once on each server tick.
  • Due to the limitation to server ticks, cooldowns are effectively always rounded up to multiples of 33ms.

The thresholds in the table below are meant to be upper limits. If you stay below them, you do not need to increase your trigger rate. However, it usually is an efficient DPS upgrade, but going above them is something you must not do.

If the attack you use to trigger your spells is just slightly too fast and your spells are still on cooldown, you can lose up to almost half your DPS.

Cost

Triggered gems cost mana, the mana cost is the same as the triggered spell mana cost multiplied by the mana multipliers of the supported gems.
